Time has considerably changed and plenty of things that were not acceptable and economic 40 years ago are the only means of human beings’ survival on the earth. This makes mandatory changes in people’s behaviour and lifestyle to control their wrecking activities. So, the concept of GREEN CAREERS grows importance day in day out. As with many other things, jobs also need significant changes to their procedures and definitions to help humans and other creatures sustain their presence on the planet.

Green Career is a broad topic. It can be viewed from various
angles and expanded to the smallest activities. The International Labour
Organization introduces green jobs as: “Green jobs are decent jobs that
contribute to preserve or restore the environment, be they in traditional
sectors such as manufacturing and construction, or in new, emerging green
sectors such as renewable energy and energy efficiency” [1]. This organisation deems
improving energy and raw material efficiency, limiting greenhouse gas emission,
minimising waste and pollution, protecting and restoring ecosystem, and
supporting adaptation to the effects of climate change as the areas where green
jobs can be of help.
Green skills are the backbone of green careers. United
Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) defines green skills as: “Simply
put, green skills are the knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to
live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society” [2]. A green career does not always
need a high level of education. An important factor in turning to greener jobs
is thinking about the earth’s future and being willing to make a positive
change. Yet, education has an enormous impact on changing the attitude towards
a green way of living and working and its attraction for employers and
employees. Bonnie’s
story [3] on how she has combined her passion
for the environment and her career, is an interesting exemplar. This shows how the
right education better provided her with what she needed to choose a green career.

Employers and employees both play significant roles in this approach.
However, owing to a more dominant role in the work environment, employers are
able to start and propagate the changes more effectively. They should educate
their workforce for better environmental knowledge and sympathy and improve the
procedures to meet the environmental standards. One rewarding news is that some
pioneer companies are to conclude that they should sacrifice a part of their
income to sustain the environment, otherwise, they will lose entire profitability
soon, as a result of environmental deterioration.
When talking about green jobs, one important point should be
kept in mind: it is not just the job’s name that matters, the entire process
has to be green. For instance, producing electric cars is considered an
industry that is well-known for being green. While its products have a strong function
in preserving our Environment, it cannot be genuinely green if the manufacturing
process extends the contamination.
